Stay home or Be independent.

James Samuel

Period 4

English 3

Mr. Rodriguez

When I talk to people about college, the first thing that they ask is “where are you going to go to school at?” I have no idea how I reply to those questions, because I am confused whether to stay at home in Hawaii or go away and be on my own.

If I do decide to go away to Norwich University, which is in Vermont, I’ll have a lot more freedom and space from my parent’s and their rules. I mean sure, I have to buy my own groceries and pay for my own gas and stuff, but it would be worth it because I’ll be independent and have a chance to be on my own. Being on my own will teach me discipline, responsibility and self-confidence. I don’t want to live my whole life depending on my parents. Yes, I’m scared to “branch off from the tree and start my own life”, but I have to do it sooner or later. I do not want to be one of those people who constantly say “I’m going to do it tomorrow”; I want to do it now and get it over with while I am young. The backside of this whole thing is I will have to support myself. Being on your own and not going home to your parents every night can be a bit scary.

Leaving my house and living on my own is a little bit scary because I have never had to do it before. We are all scared of the unknown, and moving out is going out of my comfort zone. I am going to be miles and miles away from my family and friends who I have grown close to.  I mean how am I going to go to school, get good grades, play sports, and support myself by working at the same time with no support? There is only so much time in a day and doing all this stuff won’t be easy. My family told me that they always will have my back and if I needed them they are just a call away. So what do I do? Stay home or go away for college?

Whether to stay home or go way for college is a hard decision but I think that I have come up with a plan for myself. My Plan is to go away for college and attend Norwich. While at Norwich, I will play basketball to help maintain my grades and I will also work at a work-study job so that I will be able to support myself. I have found out that if you put it in your head that you can do something then it becomes a lot easier but once you start doubting yourself then everything becomes a lot harder than it was before. While recently looking on the Norwich Website I have seen that they have work-study and I would still be able to play basketball at the same time. So all I have to do is believe in myself, stand up, fight and face life.

James,
This is a great topic for seniors. I know everyone would say I would rather be independent but we all know they would be homesick too! Good paper!

GO AWAY FOR COLLEGE!! It's great that you did research on the university of your choice and have found ways to play basketball and work at the same time. It'll be a lot of work, but according to your paper, you know that you're capable. You have all the opportunities right in front of you. Good job!

You made me realize how real going off the college really is. Even though im staying here for college its still a scary experience. Im proud of you for choosing to be one of the brave individuals who has decided to go elsewhere for your education. And I wish you the best of luck buddy!!!

Go for it. There is nothing like being independent. You answer to just yourself and God. Good luck to you.

Just do whatever your instincts tell you. And show them how Hawaii people play basketball down in the islands. This was an inspirational essay.

i would totally say go to college in the mainland. If everything goes bad then you can always come back. it may be hard to be independent but who cares, life isn't fun without challenges.

I know how you feel. I'm freaked out about moving out as well, I would rather not have to fend for myslef. but you are right, everyone needs to learn responsibility and go out into the world someday. Your essay actually helped me..

thanks!

James,
I totally agree with you. For the longest time, I didn't know if I wanted to stay in Hawaii or go away for college. But after doing some research on the possible colleges I'd go to, I decided to stay here. Going which way to go isn't entirely on whether you want to stay home or be independent. Choose the college you think will give you the essential things for life. I wish you the best of luck in college, whichever way you go! =]
